Yesterday, for instance, a student asked me a question that made me pause and say out loud, thats a good question. Usually Im ready with an answer, but I had to really think about this one.His question?It started with this sentence:It has been suggested that, in the case of human brains, smaller may also mean more efficient.Why, he asked, was it mean and not means? Shouldnt there be an s there? He pointed out that the very next paragraph started with the words, This meansAs I said, it took me a moment to see why This may means sounded wrong to me. It became more clear after we looked at other example sentences.Look at the following sentences:This means we are in trouble. This may mean we we are in trouble.The difference here is in the word may. Its a modal verb. Modal verbs are a type of helping verb that add mood or feeling to a sentence (much like the subjunctive tense in languages like Spanish). The verb that comes after a modal verb should always be in its base form, meaning no to before the verb and no s or ed at the end. Take a look at the examples below:This man may need a doctor.This man needs a doctor.Other modal verbs include: would, could, should, might, will and can. See if you can spot which ones are transitive and which ones are not. It takes at least two words to tango with English phrasal verbs.At 4 o’clock on a Sunday afternoon tourists walk through an antique market in downtown Buenos Aires. As parents of school-going children, we should definitely be well aware of how our kids and their friends would behave on the way to school, and we should be extra careful while driving on the roads. We can start off by setting the right example, and also explaining to them about why they should not be doing it. Road rules: Make sure that young children who are walking on their own to school are aware of the relevant road rules, so that they do not jump out into traffic at the wrong places. It is better to prepare our kids to be careful than trusting completely to the attention of drivers on the roads. Use the right lane: For kids who skateboard or cycle to school, explain to them how much safer it is to stick to the cycling lanes wherever available. In this way you can breathe a little easier that they are out of the way of larger vehicles and following a safe route to school. On the bus safety: Though school bus drivers a re usually extra careful about safety of children on the bus, it is useful for the kids to be taught simple rules such as sitting down before the bus starts moving, and using the handrails while moving around in the bus. Debate of the week American Idol American universities have always held an appeal for young people across the world. Most British teenagers could name the Ivy League universities and the qualities that their students possess: intellectual, high-achieving and exceptionally talented. It's perhaps no surprise that more and more of the UK's teenagers are choosing to attend US universities. In many cases, they give the brightest and the best a passport to a first-class education and a first-class life. According to a recent article in The Times, however, it's the lure of meeting a rich man that is encouraging female A-level students to abandon their UCAS forms in favour of SAT tests (the American university entrance examinations) and transatlantic flights. At First Tutors, we have certainly noticed this emerging trend in young people choosing US universities and a concurrent rise in the demand for SAT tutoring. But is that really just because female students are fed up of British men and want to bag themselves an American alpha male? To believe that is to believe a facile argument that does young people a great disservice. If you are bright enough to attend St Paul's (the UK's leading girls' school which, according to The Times' article, sent 12 pupils off to American universities last year) you would not be stupid enough to incur the great time and expense involved in doing so just on the off-chance that you might meet and marry a future President. We feel that young people are attracted to US universities for other, better, reasons. Society is more globalised, and young people see their opportunities all over the world. Some US universities, especially Yale and Harvard, have unparalleled resources and offer an education and experience that is second to none. Of course, the UK has first-class universities too, but now that students have to pay their tuition fees in this country, some undergraduates feel that if they are to pay money, they may as well benefit from a unique and international experience in return. These days, higher education is a consumers' market. With the amount of scholarships on offer across the US, it actually might save some UK students money to study in the States. Let's support our students in their choice of university, wherever it is, applauding their real reasons and goals, rather than patronising them with sexist nonsense that belongs in the 1950s.

A good part of that impression is formed by more visual insights into your character: your body language, your attire, and the way that you carry yourself.Before you head in for your next in-person interview, review these tips below to help make that first impression a positive one.Dress your bestDress to impress and you’ll start the interview off on the right foot. Remember you’re not the only candidate they’re interviewing, so if you dress the part, you might set yourself a step ahead of your competition. Especially if your interview will take place abroad, dress conservatively and professionally. If you are attending an interview with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), men should wear a tie and suit jacke t, and women should keep shoulders, knees and chest covered (pants suits, for example, are ideal). Instead of rushing to answer before you have a fully formed thought, take a second to breathe. A moment of silence is never a bad thing--it shows that you’re carefully considering your answer and you’ll sound much more confident. Pacing yourself and adjusting how quickly you speak is another good trick. If you don’t rush yourself through your answers, your brain will have more time to think through what you want to communicate before you commit to saying any one thing.Do your research and be informedThis doesn’t have to be something that takes a lot of time, but you’ll make a much more impactful impression if you are able to answer questions with a more informed answer. Knowing a little something about the school you’ll be teaching at or the educational climate of the country will prove useful. Be clear, concise, and provide specific examples to demonstrate your knowledge of the school and its inner workings, and how your expertise will benefit the school in general. Doing some cultural research around your country of interest and demonstrating cultural sensitivity and flexibility are other key ways to stand out from other candidates.Be prepared to discuss your strategies for working with English language learners, managing the classroom, assessment methods, and adapting to a new culture.Watch what you eatThough this might look more like dieting advice than an interview tip, it shouldn’t be overl ooked. Take two seconds before the interview to stand in front of a mirror and smile for yourself to check your teeth.Sit up straightPosture is so important. Not only does sitting up straight give the impression that you’re generally interested in the position and what the interviewer is asking, but it will help keep you focused and engaged. Try for a neutral sitting position--don’t lean back because this might suggest boredom or general lack of interest. But leaning in too much can be just as problematic and may be read as aggressive. The best thing you can do is just sit up straight with your spine in a neutral position. Although it seems so simple, this neutral posture will convey a sense of confidence and credibility.
